Car theft in Victoria reached its highest level since 2001, with more than 32,000 vehicles stolen in the 2025 calendar year and the figure rising by 96.9 percent across three years. The method behind that rise is not a smashed window. It is a device that costs less than a set of tyres.

The car is the target, and the house is just the route

Two separate crimes have merged. Some vehicles are taken electronically from the driveway without anyone entering the house. Others are taken after an aggravated burglary in which offenders enter specifically to find keys on a hook near the door. Aggravated home burglaries fell by 19.9 percent in the year to March 2026, but they remain around 23 percent above where they sat three years ago, and Victoria Police have noted that aggravated burglaries involving the theft of a car are predominantly committed by younger offenders rather than adults.

For homeowners in Stonnington, Boroondara and Bayside, that combination is the real risk profile. High value vehicles on the driveway, deep front setbacks, mature landscaping that provides cover, and a house that is worth entering only because the keys are inside it.

How key cloning actually works

Key reprogramming and cloning devices are legitimate tools. Locksmiths and mechanics use them to access and re-key vehicles when a customer has lost a key. They are also readily available to buy online. Victoria Police estimate that between 30 and 40 percent of car thefts in the state involve this technology, and more than 800 key reprogramming devices were seized in a single year.

The devices access a vehicle’s electronics, override its security features and program a new key so the car starts without the original ever being present. Vehicles with push button start built through the mid 2010s onward are the most exposed. Toyota LandCruiser, HiLux, RAV4 and Camry models, along with the Subaru Impreza and WRX, appear repeatedly in Victorian theft data.

Why an alarm inside the house is the wrong layer

Internal motion sensors trigger after entry. Door reed switches trigger at the moment of entry. Both are too late for a crime that takes ninety seconds and often does not require entry at all.

Detection has to begin at the property boundary, on the approach, while the offenders are still walking up a driveway and deciding whether this house is worth the risk. Everything after that point is evidence collection, not prevention.

Around one in five vehicles stolen in Victoria is never recovered. Where recovery does happen, it is usually driven by plate identification and by a usable description in the first hour. No. A doorbell camera covers a doorway after someone reaches it, records to the cloud, and notifies a phone that is usually on silent. It is a useful evidence device and a poor prevention device.
